Trike to 3 axis

Postby Biggles » Sun Apr 01, 2007 3:14 pm

We have a quite a few com pilots through the mine site as the only way to get here is by air. Invariably the bar conversation end up with a grown man shivering at the thought of having to push forward to go up...

This week-end I hitched a ride on a Cessna Caravan and I sat in the right seat. After getting in the air the PIC told me to take the yoke. I found it very easy to adapt to the yoke. We did some manouvers to get me used to the controls and off we went. At one piont i was doing fairly steep turns so the pax could take pictures of a waterfall. When we finished the PIC told me not to use so much right rudder... I told him I hadn't been using the rudder... Woops, I had slipped back to using the right pedal as the throttle.

Once I had played around with the rudder for a while (5 minutes) I got rid trying to use it as a throttle...

Anyone else have tales of converting between trike and 3 axis?

David, it's quite simply really. The hand stirs the pap in the pot and the other hand controls the volume...... :D
Airspeed, altitude, or brains....you always need at least two

I had a flight, last year in a Tecnam owend by AFOS for about 15 minutes, and also no problem. I think it might get a bit wild on the rudder in a cross wind for me

It opposite for us blik drivers. Rydaar wheels when we land and pull in the flair keeps instructors young. I gave the boys at FASI a couple grey hairs... Usually something like,
Destrutor - let's have a coffee break,
Me - naaah I fine for a couple more circuits.
Destructor - Coffee NOW - I need to calm nerves....

In their defense they climbed (don't know how willingly) back in the saddle after the uncontrolled shaking stopped....

PS
That what awaits FF & Co, when they land at Kroon (if I can wait that long)

Did my convex from trike to three axis in Feb, took just over 7 hours. 8)

My biggest challenge was getting used to moving the feet for cross control and crabbing on finals  the slower your airspeed, the more imput required...... it took a while to get out of trike mode of locking front wheel with your legs when on finals.

i'm with you ice man, bussy doing my ppl (90hrs on trike 6.5 hrs on jabi) and i also "lock" my feet on landings - keeping the wheel straight! as for the rest, not to bad, still prefer flying trike though - it just feels right!

Did my convex from PPL to trike in 4hrs15 and have never gotten confused. I climb from one to the next without problem. The only thing that still amazes me is that in the BB I want height immediately and with the trike I like to stay 500ft or below. It's a mental thing.
PS : Don't tell my students.
