Urgent: Where to get training in SA in February/March

Postby opus » Thu Feb 01, 2007 7:12 pm

Hi,

at rather short notice I want to visit SA for about 4 weeks starting Mid-February 2007 and would like to spend my time going for a MPL. I have following questions:
Any suggestions for training schools with good records?
Which locations are preferable in terms of weather?
Can I bring my flight medical from Germany? Or atleast the chest x-ray?

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Opus, 3-axis or trikes? Western Cape is mostly dry but windy season, still good for 3-4 hrs of flying each morning though. Gauteng and Natal normaly have rain this time of year, mostly afternoon thundershowers, but also good morning flying wx. Don't know about your medical - doubt if you'll be able to use it. Medical is South Africa will set you back R750 - R1100 and you'll be able to get an appointment on short notice.

You will find good schools in all 3 these areas, so maybe first choose where you would like to stay and then select your school in that area.

Good luck.

GR8-dad did a class 2 medical for PPL not a Class 4 for MPL.

The chest x-ray would be right but I'm not sure if CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) will accept a medical done in another country

Where are you going to be in South Africa?

Upps, for some technical (?) reason I was not able to log on to this forum - so please excuse my not responding.

I would like to express my thanks to all members who have given me one or the other link, hint or idea.

There seem to be a significant difference of fees for flight medical exam but I agree, I makes sense to get that paper in SA.

@ GR8-DAD: Chances are good that I will find more opportunities of flying a trike in Germany than a 3-axis, so I probably will go for a trike.

Something, which might become of an issue is to find a school which is located not to far away from Johannesburg or Cape Town. I'm not to fond about renting a car for some weeks to be able to access the more remote sites.

Opus, no matter where you'll be staying in SA, you'll need to rent a car to get around in any case, because we don't have anything remotely resembling a public transport system over here
