KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

Postby bryan » Wed Apr 06, 2011 12:05 pm

Hi Guys
I had the pleasure to attend a very good safety lecture last night and wish to express my thanks to the young but proffesional instructors at Border Aviation East London. I can assure you all that although I am a trike pilot , I realized that AIP's AIC's and NOTAMS are very important to ALL of us in the air. I strongly suggest those of you who think it may be boring to realize they are BUUUUT you could be in BIG shit if you do not regularly read them and get to know how to use them. NOT because some one is going to crap on you, but you could stuff up Big time if you fly and do not know what the hell is going on around you. I will definitly be paying alot more attention to these documents in future......... I BET MANY OF YOU DO NOT EVEN KNOW WHERE TO FIND THEM OR WHAT THEY ARE FOR Answer the question for yourself honestly and think about it!!!!!! ## ## ##
Regards
Bryan

My wife, only last night asked me whether she should continue collecting the sealed bubble wrapped CD's from CAA.

Since I don't have one hanging from my mirror, I've kept the latest just in case I get the urge.

Tumbleweed,
You got a point.
If only it could be made more interesting and user friendly. Perhaps CAA could include some of Alanmac's girlies.

But yes, Bryan, it is extremely important. The fact that CAA wrote a NOTAM on a boring CD and posted it to you, places the responsibility (onus) on us to be aware of what is happening. At the recent Bantam world record attempt in the Lowveld, they flew into the Barberton valley without knowing that the paragliders had a Nationals Competition going. Both events were NOTAM'd, yet nobody knew about each others activities.

Maybe the existing NOTAM system should be reviewed ?

Hi Kloot,
You are wrong in that nobody knew about the Paragliders in the Barberton Valley.
As the tail end Charlie of Orange squadron, i distinctly heard our squadron leader warning us about the paragliders BEFORE we entered the valley. Also, if you read the Bantam City Banter newsletter, you will see that we had to remain north of the Barberton Valley en route to nelspruit and to keep a look out for the paraglders, We did so, and never had a sighting of them. What a great flight that was....!!!
So somebody did read the notam and we were aware of it. perhaps a lack of communication in that the notification was not spread more widely.
all the best of Bantam wishes...

Hi,

My flippant remark was not to show disrespect to Byran's message, but rather my opinion being the inadequate impractical use that the disc offers.

Sure it's imperative for pilots to have access to issues affecting their pre-flights, but to show antiquated obsolete messages of unserviceable VOR beacons over Secunda, modified IFR approaches for IFR traffic in Plett and the MTN banner over the Monte Casino means little to me.

It would be far more efficient and cheaper to have an online access to a flight plan and integrated map system highlighting any issues for that route, time and region, like the vfrplanner webpage. That way everybody is accommodated, the IFR quickies, ntca over built-up atf’s, inter city chopper pilots and para- motors.

Wouldn’t it be great having a similar detailed map, highlighting all the different radio freq training areas, new Pinedene routing with freq, Durban special rules, explicit conservation restrictive areas as well as special notice like blasting days, air show restriction e.t.c.?

Guys not on internet could phone in with a routing and request a fax with all specific data concerned.

Here! Here! Tumbleweed

People are lazy. If the information is hard to find or not clear, it will not be well read. I fully support the idea of all the good information being made available in a more user friendly way.

We will all comply with the ramp inspection criteria if the list is published. Ask what plane xyz need to comply with and 20 okes say its in the CARs go read them. You reply saying I did, why must my Hornet have an oxygen cylinder? - No it does not, it's exempt read part abc section 12 b line 6 new version etc.

You get my drift.
