Logbook Endorsements : Correct way?

Postby Gyronaut » Sun Jul 11, 2010 11:07 am

One thing absent from my Instructors training was the correct method of endorsing a students' logbook.
eg: "Authorised Solo in the Circuit in terms of XXX" or "Authorised to leave the circuit within 50nm in terms of YYY" etc.

Can anyone point me to where I can find the correct way this is to be done? Should it preferably be done with stamps?

Any help will be appreciated since I want to do it right and I always have to revert to old logbooks to see how someone else did it - always seems to vary though.

hmm, am I being ignored or is this a really grey area?

By way of example, not one of the type ratings I have in my logbook says "Regulation 3.8 complied with" !! :shock:
ANR 2.3 states:

Aircraft rating requirements
2.3 (1) No person shall act as a pilot-in-command of an aircraft, unless he is
the holder of the appropriate type or group type rating in the case of pistonengined
aeroplanes having a maximum certificated mass of 5 700 kg or less,
or in the case of aircraft in respect of which a type rating by name is required,
he is the holder of the appropriate type rating for such aircraft: Provided that....
...
...
(b) the endorsement referred to in paragraph (a) (i) shall be made in the
column marked ‘Details of flight and remarks’ and shall contain the following
particulars, namely–
(i) an indication of the type of aeroplane, and also the registration
marks;
(ii) the words “Regulation 3.8 complied with”;
(iii) the signature of the flight instructor or designated pilot;
(iv) the licence number of the flight instructor or designated pilot, and
(v) the date; and
(c) where a type rating is in terms of this subregulation endorsed in a pilot’s
logbook and such type rating falls outside the group type rating
endorsed in that pilot’s licence, the flight instructor or designated pilot
may issue a temporary certificate of competency valid for 30 days...

It is silent on Gyrocopters by the way...
ALSO did you know that a "practical flight test" is required in terms of 3.8?

Type ratings
3.8 An applicant for a type rating for an aircraft, excluding helicopters, with a
maximum certificated mass of 5 700 kg or less shall –
(1) undergo a practical flight test –
(a) wherein a high standard of vital action drill shall be required;
(b) to the satisfaction of –
(i) a Grade I, Grade II or Grade III flight instructor, in respect of an
aircraft with maximum certificated mass of 2 700 kg or less...

Am I the only one not entirely sure about this?
