How to avoid nasty Incidents : Do Your maintenance!!! (-)

Postby PastMaster » Tue Sep 01, 2009 2:28 pm

Hi Members,

How to avoid nasty Incidents : Do Your maintenance!!! (-)

I took the wing to Jenya for rebuild, as per schedule, Stranger 14 , 14 years old, and look at the bent bracket, with tear. My next flight would have been my last Takeoff or landing, according to Jenya!!

1.Nose plates holes are warned. The plates need to be replaced.
2.Left hand top upright channel is cracked and bent badly ( very dangerous!!!). MUST be replaced!

Thanks Jenya for excellent service and advise!!!

Happy Landings!!!

Holly SH%#@T,

Glad you took the wing in, pretty scary stuff. How many hours does the wing have on it?.

Do not have my logbook with me, but Motor was done on 600 hours, wing is 14 years old, and flew some 30h odd after motor was done.

630 hours, but the big thing is the 14 years. Sail stitching starts to break and run.

Wow -

But Begs the question - why didnt the oke you AP'd your plane every year for its ATF pick up on that? Surely every year the oke would have looked at it and noticed the degradation ??

I can understand that under normal conditions the nose plates and other holes can have some elongation but surely the upright cannot bend and crack by itself? Was the plane / wing in any type of incident? Blown over ect?

Hi,

Spoke to Jenya, and the fact is the bracket got damaged when folding and transporting the wing.

How ever, you are correct in terms of the the nose plate wear and tear.

The problem i have is that most of us where never ## told to inspect the upright bracket in detail !!!!! (-) (Crack was at the top)

So, happy landings

you have got to take the aircraft maintenece manual very seriously. If it says to replace a part and x amount of hours or years DO IT!!

The trikes I have flown always had the same manual for wing and undercart. The engine on the other hand has a different one. Now some trikes manufactures offer different wings on their undercarts so when purchasing a aircraft be sure to ask for all maintenance manuals. There was an accident in balito that was also on this form where a wing colapst and come to find out the wing had thousands of hours on it and had crops spraying for thousands of hours and the pilot failed to respect the manual. I also highly recoment that pilots have wings inspected by a professional (not an AP) every 2 years. The wing needs to come off the cart and spreader bar bolts and all brackets must be thoroughly checked. IMO

My Trike is ZU-BBU with the same wing. I do check everything thoroughly and regularly, but admit that some bolts and brackets should probably be replaced.

Incidentally, the elongation of the holes on the nose plate is intentional - Flying wires on this wing are slack when unloaded, and the elongation allows leading edge tubes to flex up and down. I nearly made the mistake of overtightening the bolts when I first got the trike, and then realised what the elongation was for.

It always goes back to the fact that the AP is not going to be flying the thing - it is you who will have 2000 ft of air under you when something lets go. Check your own aerie as carefully as you think your life is worth
