Medical Valid

Postby cabinhottie » Thu Nov 20, 2008 1:39 pm

Good day all.

I have recently returned from the Middle East where I did six month of Cabin Crew. I posses a Aviation medical for Cabin Crew. They are somewhat stricter and you undergo blood tests etc for the medical. The medical is valid till 2011.

Will this be recognised in SA ? And if so will it be sufficiant for a MPL?

Advice would be appreciated.

Have a good day

Very good question

Microlights need the lowest, i.e. read easiest flight medical, namely a grade 4.

Aircrew would need probably a Class 2 which is sufficient for PPL. However in SA they only recognise a class 2 for a max of 24 months. Yours is valid for 48

I suggest you call CAA and discuss it with them

Here is the CAA Document http://www.caa.co.za/resource%20center/ ... 0Guide.pdf

Now that is the question!

Being a medic myself, I tried my best to get the details. But I am so NOT fluent in Arabic so understood nothing! Urine samples were taken too.

Blood normally taken for cholesterol testing. Urine samples is to test if you are a diabetic.

In sa cholesterol test not done for medical, but they sometimes do it as a service to your health and their wealth.

yes on my flight medical I have to submit a urine sample to check for sugar levels. They don't normally request a bloodtest unless you are known to be hypertensive, i.e. highblood pressure. Then they will ask for liver and kidney function tests, blood sugar tests and while they are at it Cholestorol. (all this is done with the blood samples)

BTW high Cholestorol will not stop you flying, but at least you will know about it and have time to do something about it.

The arabs always do everything differant. I am trying to find out what all the tests were for. Although all these extra tests were done. There was NO lung function test done??? Which I found most strange. There was also no stress ECG only 1 done at resting rate?

For which class medical did you go??

For class 1 & 2, you need stress level ECG done. Level 3 & 4 only resting ECG. Did he listen to your heart with a stetoscope?? If so, he also listened to your lungs. If they sounded fine, he might skip the lung function test.

It was for a Cabin Crew Licence to operate international flights. No he did not bring the steth anywhere near my thorax. Logic says that being a cabin crew member operating at 40 000ft (our usual alitude in the Airbus A330-300 and A340-600. Should there be a rapid de-compression the TUC would be severly reduced if the Lung Function is low or reduced? Sure you will know that the O2 masks are not so freely and readily avalible fot the crew as the Flight Deck. Every 5th Row is an "IFR: Infant Free Row for the reason that there will be another O2 mask for the cabin crew, so to me Lung Function seems important for a Cabin Crew. As well as a Stress ECG.

Being the middle east I am not sure how they class their medicals. I can scan my Medical Card in if needed.
