Postby Frequent Flyer » Tue Sep 23, 2008 4:10 pm

Anybody have any details on hanglider tugging / towing with a trike? What does it involve? a tug rating? which trikes are suitable? any info please!

Seen the guys at Aviators' Paradise (FAAP) doing it on Sundays (tugging).
Maybe they can help.

Tug pilot at Aviators Paradise's name is Tobie 082 900909five

They pull the hangliders up midday when 34degrees C- Pretty impressive, they use a Airborne Edge Wizard 582

They often asked me to become tug pilot, I just laughed and ordered another Windhoek vhpy

Nope, will take some pics when I am there again
How is rope attached - I am not technical so will give my best explanation. Airborne has 4 Blade brolga prop with "hole" in the middle of the Hub with a towing device which protrudes probably 10cm away from hub - The pilot can disconnect the rope in flight with this device to let go of hanglider or let go of rope when landing" - Normal rope is attached to this towing device

Howdy from "The White Stick Pilot",

You will need a rating.

The hang glider pilots will need a dolly to take off in the prone position.

Trike will need a big wing and slow cruise <40mph.

Tow line approx 50 metres.

Not the safest form of trike flying.

I have a dragonfly that is made for towing hanggliders.it takes off very slowly .it has the proper tow and release gear.
you do have to have a tow rating.

I have heard the it used to be done at Bapsfontein a few years back, with a dolly, as John said.
Aparently it was stopped due to the high number of accidents.
Larry at Bapsfontein may have some information.
