Wanting to go solo on a different make trike - HELP

Postby extra300s » Wed Jul 09, 2008 2:17 pm

Hi there guys.

I have bought an Aerotrike Scout a few weeks ago and pondering the following. I want to do most of the solo hours on my own trike - to fly mine, get use to it and save money! My question is this. After I have done my min 10 hours dual with the schools trike, which is an Aquilla 503 can I go solo on mine?

Thanks
Karl

It depends on what types are on your student pilot's lisence. If you haven't got it yet make sure your instructor puts it on your lisence with your initial application. Not sure of the procedure after you received your SPL but I suspect you will have to re apply for a SPL

Thanks KFA

Have not applied for my SPL yet. Giving my instructor my medical, id and 5 photos this Saturday. Will talk to him about what you said.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

You must do a conversion with the instuctor and then no problem. You can do your duel hrs on your plane.

Do not mind to use schools trike for dual. As I plan to solo just after my 10 hours dual are completed. The 15 solo hours I would love to do on my own trike.

Hi extra,

Don't bother with the dual controls. Just fit the training bars. If you are at 10 hours, you will be able to do conversion without dual throttle. But talk to your instructor and find out with what they will be comfortable.

I had a student last year with the same senario, but he allready had his SPL. CAA said that they could not add another type to a SPL. If it was not on the initial application you have a probl. This may have changed. Best way is to put it on your SPL from the beginning.

Happened to a student of mine last year.
You MUST get a NEW SPL with the new trike reflected on it....then there is no problem doing solo work on it.

Do NOT fly it until this is done - even if there is a proper conversion done endorsed in the logbook etc....CAA will not accept it. You must get a new SPL

Thanks Russel, that's the way I have it also. I now put all the school types on a SPL just to make sure.

Just carefull withn that too...
CAA checked the amount of time one of my students had done on all the types...! Although he had written the Tech for the Aquilla Z159, we intended doing some Dual and Solo on it, the licence issued did not include it.

Do I need to register the trike in the training schools name for me to go solo on it?

Thanks

I don't think so...
As far as i know you have to change the category from private to owner training.
Its all so complicated! ##

When you register the trike in your name and apply for the ATF, all you do is register it for OWNER TRAINING. Nothing complicated about it at all. No problems with CAA. Trike does not have to be registered as a schools trike. Enjoy the flying. :)
