What is the eye sight requirements for obtaining a class 1 medical ? :wink:

You will only need a Class 4 for Microlights and LSA

Planning on doing my ppl and cpl next year.

As long as you don't wear coke bottles for lenses, or have colour blindness you should be ok. Best insurance is to go to doctor and do your medical. PEace of mind.

I had a few ppl students who failed the medical on other grounds after doing a few hours of flying. If in doubt do the medical first.

The biggest difference I believe optically is a colour test is required on Class 1. I.e. if you suffer from colour blindness you might have a problem

Hi,
I read an article in a magazine while in Exclusive Books yesterday. It was based on a very experianced SAA pilot. (I forget his name! :oops: ) He apparentaly wore coke-bottle glasses as a boy, but he still manages to get his medical every time and has over 21 000 hours experiance on airliners!!
I agree with Windswept, best is to get the medical first as then you don't waste valuable money doing all the hours!

The eyesight thing is a personal issue with me. I passed my medical no problems but seriously wish I could see better. (Some of the guys I fly with can see the ball hairs on a muggie at 200m). To mitigate this deficiency : my experiance is type of eyewear that suits trikers, my personal preference is tungston type glasses frames they flex easier with the headphones on, I need the auto tinting but that can be a bitch sometimes, visor is also a good option. My specs setup is part of my CHIPS check to to make sure they are on right on takeoff, its not easy to correct them in flight. I also make sure guys know where I am when I am airborne to ensure they can see me. I am sure I will get a reputation for talking too much on the radio ($$) . After 2 close shaves I now fly 1/2 mile or so off the GPS line after takeoff and the same on approach.
