Controlled Airspace

Postby topflight » Tue Apr 07, 2009 1:03 pm

If I want to fly across controlled airspace is it always necessary to have a transponder in die A\C or are there some (controlled airspace) airports that doesn't require a transponder :?:

Transponders are not required for flight in controlled airspace but a radio is.

Most of controlled airspace in South Africa is Class C...in the figure below they require that all flights operating in Class C must have a transponder  is this true?

You must have a transponder to fly in TMA for eg, but you do not need a transponder to fly into Rand for eg. Depends on the airspace and waht you want to do. Even with a transponder some airspaces will not let you in, but they often have alternative below. It has to do with IF separation. Where do you want to fly? Some controlled zones are very quiet and they often oblige, others are just too busy. If you want to fly into an airport which I suppose is controlled zone you do not need a transponder (with exception of maybe FAJS and FAPE), but to fly in TMA you do.

PS
It also costs bucks to fly inside a TMA for eg...

Thanks RV4ker, I am only at the beginning of my flight training and these things can get confusing when you read something and somewhere else you read something different. I suppose these things get more clear as one progress.

Things get plenty clearer (most of the time) as you progress. Where do you fly? The Cape Town boys fly in military space with no transponders and have a good relationship with ATC... Always ask questions. We all learn from them...

I've always preferred to make a fool of myself to somebody over the phone rather than to everybody over the radio!

Topflight, if you are ever in doubt - just phone the ATC of your destination area / airfield and ask. More often than not, they will appreciate the call and do everything they can to accommodate you. vhpy
