Rating on Trikes

Postby Bayliner » Sat Feb 28, 2009 6:06 pm

Hi All

I am about to complete my training. I have bought a Polaris Skin but will have been trained on an Aquila Trike. According to my instructor I will need to be rated on the Polaris before I am allowed to fly. He is not rated for the Polaris and therefore cannot give me a rating and apparently there is no instructor in the greater Cape Town area who can do this for me. Is there anybody out there who can shed a little more info on this issue? Is it true that I will not be allowed to fly the Polaris if I only have an Aquila rating?

Your advice will be much appreciated as right now I have that sicky feeling in my stomach.

Hi,

Yes, it's true.

But don't lose heart. It's not a big deal. !!!!

Options -

1. Take a cheap air ticket and fly to a rated instructor for the conversion (if there is a trike available), or

2. Use a cheap ticket and fly a rated instructor to your location, or

3. Use a cheap ticket and fly your instructor to a rated instructor, or

4. Pack up your trike and trailer it to a rated instructor for the conversion.

In my case, before the GT450 arrived I used option 3 above.

The conversion won't take long.

There was talk that the rating thing on trike will fall away. Everyone know that all trikes pretty much flies the same. Will this still happen??

I am almost 100% sure Louis Van Wyk has this on his MPL!
Give him a ring on 021 975 3891 or check out their site: http://www.aerosport.co.za
Hope this helps!

Thanks John. I will discuss your options with my instructor. I will just need to find a suitably rated instructor.

Ross, thank you. I will give Louis van Wyk a call and have a chat with him.
