GPSs are way over priced in SA. I'm not sure where in the 'food chain' the clearly excessive mark-up is slapped on.

No matter; fortunately there is a way of by-passing the local supply chain. Garmin GPSs can be sourced much cheaper than in SA - like almost half price - by ordering off the web from GPS City. No duty is payable on GPSs; you only have to pay 14% VAT on the converted US$ value on landing. Typical order to arrival time is 5-10 days.

I know plenty of folks who have done this without any problems in the 4x4 arena. Some multiple times.

I've heard of local suppliers citing warrantee issues and mapping issues as an argument against sourcing overseas, I find those arguments thin at best, since whatever the default maps on the unit, you will be loading local mapping data, the units are very reliable (I know of only one that had to be returned to Garmin) and if they do go wrong, ship them out to be fixed/ replaced - simple. The only other real argument for sourcing locally, is to support local suppliers. I'm happy to do that, but not if I'm being ripped-off - all too common with manufactured goods in SA.

Just be careful that you know the spec of the machine you buy.
