Lightspeed QFR headset - any comms boffins?

Hi - I fly an open cockpit gyro with an ICOM A200. Previously used Tom-Tom headsets and had 5/5 comms. (In fact often received comments from other pilots and ATC on the quality of comms!)
"Upgraded" to Lightspeed QFR Solo headsets as they apparently offer far better noise / ear protection. Used them on a recent fly-away and the comms quality has deteriorated significantly to the extent that some tx was unreadable
(according to the other a/c pilots I was flying with - fortunately I was able to change back to the old faithful Tom-Toms which I'd brought along just in case!).
Other than having the jacks changed to fit my plane I'm using them "off the shelf" (from Wings n Things).
Any advice as to what / why the comms should have deteriorated so drastically with the new headsets? I thought it could be wind noise (open cockpit) and fitted additional foam thingymajigs over the mic but made no difference. Help please!
