Rotax 582 "misfire"

I have flown today first time in 2 months. Noticed what "feels" like a misfire. Have noticed this before also but it seems to be more today. Every few seconds just feels a shake in the frame. Does not happen with regular intervals. No loss of power noticed. Happens at different revs from 3000 all the way up to 6000. Plugs were replaced about 10 hours ago- total hours on engine about 50. Electric booster pump on or off does not make any difference. Makes me feels uncomfortable.

I suspect ??? electric problem. :? :? :? :?
Where do I start looking for the problem? Please keep it simple as I am no expert when it comes to these things and I do not have anybody close to ask for help.

Put your old plugs back in and check again.

Check all electrical connections, feel to see if the wires inside conductors haven't broken off inside the insulation.

Check your HT leads and plug caps if correctly inserted.

If you are using screw caps on the plugs instead of the solid type, check that they are not loose.

Do the basics before you go on a tangent fault finding!

Hope you get it sorted.... (^^)

Go with Bad Nav's advice first.

I don't how far you are from Boatch but if I had a misfiring engine I would not take the chance to fly it there.
IMHO

Thanks for kind advice. He lives 60kms from me- I fly a PPC and its permanently on a trailer- will NOT fly it there. Behind my bakkie is the only way.

Enjoy!

Hi Christo
Whilst checking all the basics on the engine is always a good idea, it doesn't always present the solution to the problem. It has been my experience with modern electronic systems that they are notoriosly reliable. I wouldn,t expect to find any fault in your ignition system until after youv'e had someone "try and fix something that probably isn't broke"
My advice is always check the cheap stuff first and go to the expensive equipment afterwards.
By cheap I mean a)check your mag switches, if they are the type with that cute little red and black faceplate that says on and off, then chuck them in the bin and fit some good quality toggle switches that don't get erratic with vibration. You can't buy good quality aircraft toggles from your local chinese electronic spares shop.
b) Visually check your mag grounding wires to see if they havn't rubbed through the insulation somewhere and causing a momentary earth. Pay particualar attention to where they pass through cable ties, firewalls etc. Make sure that you don't have any wiring swinging in the breeze. make sure its all tied securely and is well supported.
Good luck on your quest and I hope you find the problem

I have the plain with me and i got some problems that i sorted out . The plugs was the BPR 8es type so we orderd the correct stuf from Aviation Engines and also the carb sockets . Still there is this same misfire now and then but could see no drop in the RPM. While she runs on revs i switch on the electr feul pump and i also tried to choke her and still the misfire.I have taken out the carb pisten and moved the surclip up one notch and now the problem is worce. The misfire starts at as low as 2500 to 3000 RPM so it tells me that the problem is feul relatted .If there is some expurts out there ho has something else that i could check PLEASE let me know.

We once had a 582 that did the same - We eventually tracked it down by switching the carbs with those off another 582. Problem gone! I blew out all the internal passages and jets with compressed air and that fixed it.

A good way to clean out the galleries and jets, especially the small slow running jet,in the carbs is to use a can of carb cleaner, has good pressure to clean out any forgein bodies and fuel residue. I would be careful moving the needle clip postion around as this only effects 3/4 to full throttle and can increase your EGT if you go lean.
Another problem I had was if you have a marine hand primer bulb fitted, the non return valves vibrate apart and the plastic ball then floats around restricting fuel flow, if you have an electric pump before this primer it can make the fuel flow problem worse.
Also check out that the air vent on the fuel tank is clear.
Hope this may help

I took off the magneto last night and checked all the bolts on the inside and all were tight and i could find nothing wrong. It could be the coil or durt in the carb. If you are int to make your own puller for the magneto you can use the inner cv joint of a vw golf and weld a nut to the centre of the cv ,all three of the holes on the mag is the same as the ones on the cv and it fits flat on the mag .
