Trikenut.
TBO is the number of hours the motor needs to be overhauled at. It is at this time that if you had a bank balance, you won't have one after.

Hi Ross,
Time Before Overhaul on the 91X Rotaxes are quoted between 1200-1500 hours, some make it some don't, it depends on how hard the engine works. I know in some applications the 914's are rebuild after 700-800 hours.
An Overhaul on the 912 will cost you about R80K, the 914 more.....
Fly safe,
Rudi

yeah recommended TBO on the engine is 1500 hours but the gearbox doesn't make it there. Work on a gearbox rebuild around 400 hours. +- R15k for that. Engine rebuild is around R100k currently.

Yes, and that is why the Jabiru is such a great deal, for the price of a Rattax rebuild you can buy a new 2000 hour TBO engine WITHOUT a gearbox (no gearbox needed as it is direct drive).
I know of quite a few Jabirus (Local school) that has made the 2000h TBO without major problems. Oh, and when you do get to the rebuild stage it only costs around R17K

Yip, I was trying to buy a second hand Jab motor, so I asked the factory what the absolute worst case overhaul cost could be. They said that they had not seen anything much over R28k, but in theory it could be as much as R35k. Compare that to a MINIMUM overhaul cost of R69k for a Rotax.
Just a pity the second hand market is so bad - people just don't get rid of them! Only second hand sales of Jab engines I have seen, are people upgrading to the 3300, or 2200A (but staying Jabiru, of course).

Hi Guys,
So if I understand correctly, there is no set TBO on a Rotax 4 stroke, only a reccomended TBO?
Unlike a Rotax 2 Stroke, which is a set 600 hours. Or is it 300 hours??

No, it is "set" in the manual as well..... You have the same chart as the 2 strokes that shows what should be done when, and it includes overhaul.
Yip, the 300-600 hour thing, I have a 618 on just over 400 hours.........

They are all only recommended TBO, even the old Continentals and Lycomings.
In their infinite wisdom, South Africa's CAA have decided that recommended TBOs are mandatory

Gotta love the Aerovees. 600-1400 TBO depending on condition. Comes in at around R5k for the overhaul. Parts take up the major portion of that cost because the work is done by yourself as the builder/owner of the engine.

Yes, that's true, it is only mandatory here in SA

They are really doing their best to kill the sport, so much for "Experimental" aircraft.....
I have been thinking of designing and building a plane from scratch but the red tape and paper work killed that plan

Hi,
Mark Becker had the same prob! He went to mozambique in may and needed to overhaul his engine because of the 300 hour TBO!

He actually was doing it because no one new what was happening, so he went the safe route!
I helped him to do Said overhaul!
Cheers
