I am sooo gatvol of trying to sort out my 503 electrical wiring problem and need some expert help please.

Fitted new EGT, radio and coms................everything worked perfectly. Then only one EGT showed a reading and every now and then both worked again ( it is not a bad connection as I double checked it).
Next the radio "died" on me while flying ( using the trike battery).....................a faulty fuse was the cause and the battery did not charge. I replaced the fuse and battery and a charge-reading of 13.8 whatever is measured. BUT now there is a terrible engine noise (headset) and is worse when I press the PTT. I`ve been flying this aery for 5 years and never had any problems with engine noise in my headsets. The noise is gone when I remove the fuse. I am not 100% sure where the wire runs from but I think it comes from the regulator to the battery and is connected to the positive.

This is the third weekend trying to solve the problem(s). I had a lot of help from the guys at our airfield, for which I am very thankfull but now need someone to FIX this problem.

As I have no idea what I am doing and have no electrical wiring knowledge it would be a bonus if someone in the Pretoria area could come and have a look.

If you know of someone or can give some help..................

Hi Jody,

A 13.8 volt “dirty input” from the ignition will give you the most awful comms.

You have 2 options –

1. Follow the thread below and build the RF Choke that I designed – approx. R70 -

viewtopic.php?t=1135&highlight=choke

For info, there are at least 8 trikes flying with this RF Choke – all have perfect comms, or

2. Contact ZULU1 and purchase the necessary.

Why? Was everything working before?

it would be a bonus if someone in the Pretoria area could come and have a look.

Elaborate on Pretoria area please...........I work in the surrounding areas daily and occasionally have time on my hands

I replaced my CHT`s with EGT`s. The radio was one of that old ones and could not be pre programmed.(upgraded a bit)

I think the problem is somewhere in between the mags and the rectifier or the rectifier and the battery. The reason why I think this is that when I remove the fuse (disconnect the wire), the noise is gone (obviously the battery is not charging now). If I remove the fuses anywhere ells the noise persists.

I fly from Kroon "International". It is next to the N4. +/- 1 mile north of the red and white radio mast and +/- 5 km south west of Roslynn.

I was told that it might be the rectifier which I am going to remove this evening and have it tested tomorrow. I don`t think me fidling with the wires when I fitted the EGT`s caused the problem???

I would appreciate any help as I can`t wait to get my ass in the air ( I`m stating to get withdrawal symptoms)

Jodie, it's almost impossible to diagnose this sort of thing without seeing the installation and knowing exactly what you did and what you didn't do.
Unfortunately Kroon is a bit too far me.

Die ander ding wat jy nie moet vergeet nie is om die prop fokken vas te maak hoor baie styf.

There is Talk and then there is Torque

Props, or rather the prop bolts, need to be Torqued.

"...ken vas" is just as bad as "te los".
