Microlighters

On my AP rounds I still find people NOT treating their K&N airfilters right. If you wash a K&N air filter in petrol, you can throw it away. I will filter buggerall out afterwards. Also do NOT blow out a K&N filter with compressed air.It will be destroye permanently. RTFM ( READ THE FERKIN MANUAL.)
The correct way. Clean the filter with detergent dishwasher liquid soap ( Sunlight Liquid) and lukewarm water. Put the filter in the sun untill dry. Then spray K&N filter oil on the filter, making sure you do not miss any spots. K&N filter oil can be bought from all performance auto shops, or from Midas. It is a bit pricey, but overhauling your engine will cost a LOT more.
Sobering thought: IF you filter is buggered, the dust sucked into the engine goes thru the crank-case FIRST!! Over the poor crank-shaft. Heeey manne, just imagine the ensueing "grinding paste" eating away........ You will be very popular at AE. Remember, these cranks are "verryverry expensiv aitims". Life and limb depends on the bloody thing, look after it. End of sermon. Amen

Those filters are made from a high grade "Cotton" hot water and "clothes washing powder" work brilliantly....let them soak for a few hours in a buckett and then rinse with warm water then let them dry thouroughly.

I rotate 2 sets so I always have a clean set and don't put off changing them when they look dirty.

Agree with Boet...the K N oil is best.....you can see the coating on the filter when sprayed and also the discolouration when it gets dirty...

So next time you buy a pre-owned Rattex enjaain, look at them filtahs: If it is a dirty brown colour, the engine has not been cared for well.

Masterparts in Bellville, strand street, is the agent for K&N in cape town. They should be able to help as well.

K&N also has a detergent you can use with it.... as Boet says RTFM!

Sunlight Liquid obviously also does the trick... remember to use the warm water option. Oil does not like cold water - it gets a sticky!

i,ve been washing mine for years with petrol mix with a little bit of 2 stroke.

and after 800 hours of hard flying it looks the same as the day that i bought the trike and no harm done what so ever to the engine.....

so any takers on thus one.....

Good for you. What type of environment do you fly in, i.e. clean tar runways or sandy environment. What are the chances of dust ingression into the motor etc?

currently in dusty,but filters are being cleaned every 20 hours..

iam not saying that what u guys are saying are not true,different people do different things,so i stick too what i know.

if u look carefully the k.n spray are a filter lubricant,so is the 2 stroke oil that has been mixed with the petrol.

i.will bring one of my filters along to prove a point.

The problem is not the 2-stroke oil, it is the petrol that causes the fibers to swell, that is according to K&N, used their filters for years while racing bikes.

hmmm thus is a bummer..

well i ve been cleaning mine for years with petrol and 2 stroke oil mix..

maybe i am just lucky,but so far so good and i had no problems with the kn filters....

how do one explain that???
