Single CDI - Newbie Question

Postby Turbo_Boss » Sat Mar 22, 2008 6:45 pm

Hello guys,

I am thinking on buying a Rotax 447 and as you already know this engine has a single CDI vs a 503 that has two CDI´s.

How reliable are this Ducati/Bosh single CDI? Are they prone to fail easily?

Whats your experience using a single CDI Rotax Engine? You know, I am a little scare that this part fail in the air

Thx

Isaac

The ignition units are very reliable, and I have heard of 2 failures in the last 3 years and this is one dual and one single. The dual, the guy noticed it during mag tests, and the single,....well he ended up in a field somewhere

The single ignition just does not have that redundancy. Now if you are happy to take the risk, albeit fairly small, and you are happy to know any ignition related issue is going to cause an engine out then go ahead. Just make sure to practise your forced landings and make sure you never fly over terrain that is unfriendly.
