Fitted the new oil thermostat on Friday to my 912 Quantum. What a great device. Almost halves engine warm-up time. Kept my oil temp happily between 93 and 97 degrees. Max was 100 degrees on full power. This was with my oil radiator fully uncovered. Normally I have to keep it fully or partially covered to get my oil temp up.

Was even impressed with the price of R653.00 : incl vat from Aviation Engines.

A must on your wish list.

Please keep us posted on how it behaves. I was originally a bit worried that the flow rate (it's used on merc trucks) would be to high to be effective with the relatively low flow rate of the 1300 cc engine.

Hi CloudBase.

I also felt exactly the same when I inspected the unit visually. As it does not fully bypass the oil from the radiator when the oil is cool. I still think that on really cold days, below 15deg it will be nessasary to close 25% of the radiator off to get your oil over 90deg. Summer this wont be required.

I've only heard good feedback from the guys that have fitted one of these so today I took DOTty over to Glen at Rhino Park to have one fitted. I'm interested to see what difference it makes with oil temp warmup.

The unit has been used in the US on Rotax engines for over two years without any reported problems. It has been mentioned to me by several acquaintances in the US for some time now, but I have been reluctant to release it until Rotax released a Service document about it, send me a message (niren@aviation-engines.co.za) and I will forward you a copy.

Regards

Fetched my baby this morning from Rhino Park, with new oil thermostat fitted.

OAT - 21º.
Started, swithced on electronics, keyed radio and back-tracked 03 and then 27.
As I turned at the holding point, oil temp was 43º.
Completed runup and pre-take-off checks - oil temp 48º. (3 mins since startup)
Finish pre-rotation - oil temp 52º.
Take-off, climb 1200 fpm full power (no turbo). At end of runway 800'AGL oil temp 68º

Oil temp settled on 96º in cruise and stayed there for the flight, down to 85º on descent and landing.

I'm very impressed with the warmup time. It's about a third of the time it usually took.

PS. Note changed avatar - oil thermostat now included - :) :D
