What do you guys know about the Rotax 618.
I know it is a 75 HP engine and discontinued.

Is it any good ? What is a engine like this with 60 hours worth ?

Thanks so far.........

I have a 618 with 230 hours on my Aquilla. More than enough power, trike climbs faster than the foward speed!

I understand that the 618 was discontinued after the 912 introduction.
912 was twice the price and twice the weight for only 10 hp increase - they would never sell it alongside the 618.

How much is the motor selling for, and what gearbox?

Cheers

Great engine with best power to weight of the Rotax's. Friend of mine's got over a 1000 hrs on his - with timed overhauls - and still going strong. Although engine is discontinued, spares are readily available.

Understand there is quite a few thunderbirds with the 618.

I had a 618 on my Rans S12. Although I never flew her after rebuilding, as I could not get anyone down to Port Edward to give me a conversion. I sold it to Rudi Ventor. The motor had done about 265hrs , Contact him. He swears by the 618.
Cheers,
Vernon.

Rotax 618

Hi PIERRE,

The main difference between 618 and the 582 besides bore and stroke is the exhaust reed valves, this gives the 618 a higher altitude operation. All the carbs and ignition systems are transferrable from the 503 and 582. It has a different exhaust system.
All the other issues written on the replies are also correct.
I was offered a block with the exhaust system, just overhauled for R18k. This excludes all the carbs, ignition system and radiator.
This is a great motor given that it is tuned and installed by a competent technition who has done the relevant course.
regards
Jacques

No way! That's too easy.
Read that statement again and think about it. If you're still not sure, I'll tell you.

Indeed. That's exactly what I did. I assisted everyone by alerting them to a wrongful statement.

Pierre

wish I could get an offer like that....

If my memory serves correctly the crank spec is 600 hours! So why can't the 582 be the same....?

Would love to put the 618 into my cheetah!

No, the crank is also 300 hours on the 618

Mine was inspected at 300h and found to be 100%, now sitting on about 430, I am not planning on opening it again till 800 hours unless forced, and then I will replace it with a Jabiru.

Thanx.... I stand corrected! Did some browsing and it appears, my dear sir that you are correct! My humble apologies! As for the JAB issue, I tend to agree with you! Somebody mentioned here somewhere that Andrew was selling them at around R 55 000. A new 85hp Jab costs in the region of R 95 000 I think....

Hi Bad Nav,

No problem :D

I think at R55K it is a great deal ! Even if it has a couple of hundred hours it will still have more hours left than a Rotax !

I am looking at putting one on my Rans and the new Zodiac will get one for sure, but here I am considering the 3300, the only problem with the 3300 is the waiting list, they have become VERY popular in the USA.

My Shadow has a 2200A and what a sweet running engine, and economical !

My 618 also runs very well and has lots of power, it is only the fuel consumption, and now this 300h crank thing that is a problem.

Fly safe,
Rudi

I really like the new Rans S-19......

Wonder what it would go like with a 100HP Smart diesel engine....

Think of the awesome range!!!!

Yes, the S-19 looks good ! The Rans kits are really very well made and easy to build. The S-19 is on my short list of "next project".

I have been looking at the diesels, would love to give one a try. I have flown the diesel C172 and it is really impressive.

I wonder how difficult a local engine conversion would be...
