Spats on rear wheels

Postby DarkHelmet » Fri Aug 19, 2005 4:10 pm

My trike rear wheels are not covered - Weight and all that jazz I was told,

I am considering getting me some for my Aerotrike Safari

Pro's

1. No water in the carbs
2. Do they give more stability in turbulence?
3. Help me here...

Cons

1. Weight
2. What else?

ditto per Demon's comments.

The weight of a pair of spats is minimal, they also help prevent the wheels flicking things up into the prop.

Most open cockpit Trikes do not require wheel spats to fly correctly. They are such huge drag machines that you only really need them for looks.

However the moment you fit a cockpit you are effectively creating a rudder in the front. This can cause a problem where the undercarraige wanders from left to right in flight. Not nice.

So now apart from nice looks, less drag, you need them to fly straight to cancel the effect that the cockpit has.

You will see that most higher performance trikes like the Blade, Quik etc have very large fins on their wheel spats.

See picture of me flying a Pegasus Quik in the UK last year.

Ugh, those spats look like helmets from the movie "Coneheads". Yetch, that's the ugliest thing I've seen on a trike

Sorry Big D, Person, Sir :!: :!:

I meant to say those are not the most aesthetically pleasing spats I have ever seen. In fact those are perhaps the most unaesthitically pleasing spats I have ever seen :D :D
Here's a thought why don't they fit a rudder on these things, would make landing easier and you wouldn't have to fit these spats :?:
