Vibration and performance.

2 blade - most efficient, best performance but with vibration

3 blade - lower performance, smoother operation. Expect about a 3% to 5% degradation in performance

4 - blade even smoother, lower performer

etc etc etc

In fact the most efficient prop would be a single blader but you would have to counterweight it or it will create huge problems on bearings etc.

There is a self launching glider called the "silent" that uses a single blade prop

The more blades you have the higher the drag in engine out situations.
