I believe that Castrol have discontinued TTS and have replaced it with something called R2 Endurance. Anyone know anything about this and whether the R2 is fit for trikes. I am currently using Castrol super chainsaw but am told I should change to TTS as it is a far superior product.
Any comments or suggestions?

Absolutely nothing wrong with Super Chainsaw. I ran my little 503 for almost 600 hours on it and it works fine. I decoked the motor at 540 hours and the crank (still original) and rings were still well within specifications. Could you ask for better.

I know super TTS had a scare last year with a bad batch that was recalled.

We have been recommended to use Caltex Super TT
Davies A/C have been using it for years with no hassels

Spoke to one of Castrol's technical people - his reply:

R2 endurance is just a new formulation of TTS - a bit more oily :?: - it therefore mixes better with petrol - better distribution in the fuel. It was formulated because one of the competition came up with a similar product.

For info's sake:

TTS, therefore R2, was formulated specifically for the Rotax (go-cart racing and aviation) engines.

Nothing wrong with using Super Chainsaw, but TTS (R2) is better.

The bad batch was just the wrong dye that was added to the oil - red instead of blue. They recalled it because of what the users thought - there was nothing wrong with the oil.

Early next year, as soon as TTS and R2 are sold out, a new 2-stroke from Castrol will be on the market.

Castrol officially do not recommend oil for aviation as they have never designed or tested it for that purpose. R2 was designed for the high performance motorbike market.

I have spoken to a reliable source within Castrol who claims that R2 is "too good for microights".

R2 will be replaced with "Power 1" in the new year........presumably at an even higher price.

I've been using Caltex Super TT for years, no problems, and its cheap too. You can get 20lt from Caltex in Alberton for R280.

Is super TT the one in the grey bottle, with a turquoise label?

Surely as long as it meets the Rotax recommended standard ANY Super 2 stroke oil is fine.

So according to the Rotax 447, 503, 582 mod 90 and 99 manuals this is fine

API TC,
ASTM/CEC

Total, Caltex almost all have Super 2 Stroke oils that meet this requirement.

Rotax manual says:

ALL air-cooled engines use: Super chainsaw, API spec
Water cooled: TCW-3 Super outboard Plus.

Amen. :D
