does anybody know where i can find an electric starter that replaces / works with the pull start system on a 503?

Aviation Engines sells the kit for about R5000. I'm looking for one too but at that price I'm going to keep excercising my right arm for a while.... :D

The Challenger guys have a pulley mounted unit with a sprag clutch that seems to work well - I don't know who sells it (or the price)

Yes this is true. I am using a starter from a 1400 nissan, it's lightweight, small and I bought it for R500. The belt used on a 500mm * 17mm timing belt (R120) The timing belts have a square tooth on them. You need a large gear, which replaces the pull starter, and a small gear that is fitted to the starter motor. The large gear uses a commonly available Sprag bearing/clutch, available from most bearing manufacturers. This bearing locks when rotated clockwise and released when not. The starter is mounted on the side of the engine below the exhausts. There is an aluminium teardrop plate that has a large hole in it, where is fits over the large gear and a small hole in it where the starter motor gear is inserted through. The starter is fastned to this plate with two bolts and the whole plate is fastened to the motor using the holes that the pull starter used.

All you need then is a 12 V relay, strong enough to handle the starter motor current. I reckon you could put it all to gether for about R2K if you have a buddy with an engineering shop. The belts and gears are readily available from any belt supplier. Starter motor and relay, scrap yards. The only piece you need made additionally is the teardrop shaped plate.

I need to service my bearing fairly soon so I'll take it apart and measure it all up and post the details here

Morph your starter sound like the M4 starter I have on my 503 powerd trike c/w sprag clutch and toothed belt, works well.
