Rotax 582 will not pick up revs

Postby cjkrit » Sat Mar 28, 2015 8:09 am

After standing for 4 months I started my Rotax 582 blue top this morning.
It fired without problems but will only idle.
The moment I open the throttle it simply dies.

It was running perfectly the last time.

Advice please.

Your main jet/s are gunked up, but the idle jets are still open. Give the carbs a good cleaning.

I have checked the jets - seems nice and clean and open.
I think it must be something in the carb but can't identify the problem.
Any other ideas? :?

Did one of the carbs needles not perhaps came loose, in other words, if you pull the throttle the plunger move upwards but the needle remain stuck in the main jet? What happen when you pull the choke when you try to rev it?

I have checked the needles and they are moving freely. I have not tried to apply choke when I rev it - will do that.
What I have noticed that when engine is idling there is a lot of blue smoke - also not something which i am used to.

Thanks everybody for your advice. Much appreciated.
Very frustrated at the moment.

Regards.

Remove your main jet and clean them with a thin wire through the holes. Make sure all the holes are nice and clean. You can't always see the dirt purely by doing a visual check.

If I were you I would remove the carbs. Disassemble completely, clean all ports. Inspect all components for wear while you are at it. Adjust the carbs using the standard config. (Clip on no 3 from the top and Air screw fully in and one full turn out)

Do it properly and do it right, get complete peace of mind. This is the part that feeds your engine, you want it to be 100%

Comet Aviation supplies. Do not use a wire to clean the carbs. Go buy a good quality carb cleaner and soak the jets and clean.

Agree, wire can make small gouge marks not visible to the eye, which in turn alters the mixture on that particular carb.

I took the carbs apart and cleaned everything with carb cleaner.
It is better and I was able to get to 6300rpm but with very small and carefull throttle increases.
I think balancing or synchronising of the carbs needs to be done also.
The moment I apply rapid throttle it simply stops.

Kalahari,
When I apply choke I can easily get it to high revs. Do have a remedy for this stoppage on rapid throttle problem because you asked that specific question.

Make sure the little breathing hole on your vacuum fuel pump is open, and the pump must be installed with the hole to the bottom, not upwards.
