This is not as complicated as it seems. You do not need expensive equipment. An AP can build his own test setup for less than R100 and you need to put a bit of thought into setting up a spreadsheet to plot your measurements. If you read AC43 it mentions the use a manometer for testing your equipment so it's very legal. The advantage of a manometer is that is uses the weight of water in a tube to test the instrument. You can not argue with the laws of physics. A certain column of water at a certain height has a certain weight and that is equal to a certain pressure difference, either positive or negative. Your altimeter is a pressure instrument so it is logical that a certain pressure difference will equate to a certain reading on the altimeter. This is what you measure and plot on a spreadsheet to see what the error in the instrument is. It has to be less than 100ft positive and 100ft negative.

Hi guys

Interesting topic. Yes it has to be done yearly,we do it on all the commercial planes that comes around.
Even need to do a compass swing yearly on your standby compass and if your plane has been standing in one direction for 6 months or more the compass needs to be calibrated again.

I have some good news,I do have a Pitot/Static test set available,so the AP that would need to do such checks can call me and use my test set,to help out.
I cant do it myself yet, cause i havent done the AP exams yet.

So<if there is a AP out there in the Pta area that would like to use my test set,you are more than welcome, let me know before hand,so i can send the set to PJB for calibration before use.
