Motorcycle alternator (Perm Magnet Alt)

Postby Bosvark » Wed Mar 26, 2014 10:35 pm

I am fitting a motorcycle alternator to the flywheel side of a VW engine destined for my VP1.
Obviously the rotor is fitted to the crankshaft. The stator will be mounted onto an aluminium "cover plate/mounting plate" made for the purpose.

As the stator is mounted via its steel core, should it be isolated from the mounting plate or should it make contact with the mounting plate or doesn't it matter?

My stator core is bolted directly to the aluminium cover plate. It may be different if your cover plate is steel, or some other magnetic material.

Why don't you mount a small complete alternator?

I do have a nice little alt that came with the engine. It was driven off a pulley bolted to the f/wheel end of the crank. I don't really have space under the engine cowl so was thinking about driving it directly from the crank with the alt on the cockpit side of the firewall but was told it won't work due to a lack of revs on a direct drive and that a m/cycle alt will work better.

I had a Camry alternator fitted at the back inside the cockpit and it worked 100%

German, was it driven directly off the crank or via pulley? And for interest sake, where did you mount the battery?

Yes it was mounted directly onto the rear of the c/shaft by means of a type of a cross with two slides that would cancel out any off centre position. The battery was behind the seat. Sorry I don't have any pics left. Sonerai on Avcom built the coupler. Maybe you can speak to him.

Thks German,

If the motorcycle alternator plan doesn't work, I'll go this route. At least I have confirmation that a motorcar alternator will charge at the rev's applicable.
