any ideas what may have caused this to happen? the 582 has done 203 hours and had the annual inspection in January 2014.
i found the front starter bush completely worn with loads of play on the rotor.

You just answered yourself............the starter did it. Seen that a hundred times over.
Too much stress on the crankcase via those direct, bolt-on type starters. That's why Rotax started using the E-box with integrated starter

Now, the BIG question is!!?

How trustworthy is the 203 hours if the starter bush is completely worn. I have seen starters with more than 600 hours on still sound!!

Shouldn't have an effect on the 203 hrs of the engine. Its the starter that tried to shake itself to death and took the "bellhousing" of the crankcase with it on its journey to self destruction.
