Hi Guys,

Have been doing some reading and trying to find why you would want the oval vs conical air filter on a 582. So far, the only thing I have made out that's different is that Bing themselves make the oval filter and K&N make the conical filter.

Being new to 2 strokes can somebody shed a little light as to why the differences? Is 1 better in any way than the other?

Many thanks.

I have to oval filter...its got a K&N logo on it...I suppose the oval tends to keep both carbs more secure being linked together by the air filter...only my opinion,

Over here in the UK we are not to use the filter with the Chrome cover as they can fall off in flight.

Nick.

Don't think the oval type is available. Try to get some last year with no luck.

I recently bought an oval one from the local K&N suppliers, way cheaper than our local friendly Rotax agents.

PM if you need contact names and numbers.

You would think that the K7N chrome bit would stay on considering what you pay for these filters.

I need to service the 2 Bing 54's for a 582 blue top since am not sure when last it was done (just recently bought a unfinished BBaby project). Am leaning towards trying to find the oval type.

I also found this at http://www.ultralightnews.ca/knairfilters/

K & N SP 2703 Dual Air Filters

This dual airfilter is designed to fit the Bing 54 carburetor used on the Rotax 532/582/618. Its slim design allows for application where room is a problem.

Now I understand the reason for conical vs oval

I use both and both are fine. The theory is that the oval type supports the carbs a bit better during vibration.

I use the oval. Another factor is cost. Two conical filters are R 1180 while one oval is R845 from the Taliban. They say the oval is out of stock and has been discontinued? I also feel that the oval has an advantage in that it will ensure that both carbs get the same airflow. With two singles the front filter may be dirtier than the rear? Most probably neglegable the difference.

The oval filter is still on California Power Systems web site ($50) and still in the Rotax Parts Catalogue??

All very valid comments guys - Thank you.

I have also done some google searching and it seems you are still able to get the oval - which I would prefer to use. The cost think is a valid point Mulder, Thanks. The difference in price is maybe an hours fuel?? vhpy

I have just rebuilt my 2 bings. Was nervous at first since I have never done it but all worked out ok so far. I guess I have to refit them and see if my bit of effort will pay off.
