Joining digital maps

Is there anyone out there who knows if it is possible to "join" digital maps together. Last year I bought a complete set of aeronautical maps of south Africa from national geo-spatial information service. They were very cheap R79 most of which was for postage. They were also very efficient and sent a tracking number when they despatched the DVD, total time from initial enquiry to getting the DVD in my hand about ten days. They sent a DVD with all the maps in tif format and tfw whatever that is. I use the tiff format to look at the charts and print out A4 sized sheets of the parts of the chart I want to put in my mapholder. This works fine but I am currently planning a trip which involves crossing from one chart to another. Does anyone know if there is any software or method that makes it possible to "stitch" two charts together. I would then be possible to print the section going across two charts. Cutting and sticking hard copy print outs would be one solution but likely to be messy. Any suggestions welcome
