Vhf radio air//marine

Postby Witkop » Wed Feb 13, 2013 11:29 am

Can anybody advise me on the possibility of getting a VHF Radio with an frequency range that can cover both Marine and " Air" frequency? My reason is that i am mostly going to use my Trike on the farm and i want a radio on the ground as a base station and will also be installed in my vehicle. My problem that due to a new ruling all deep sea vessels will require a VHF radio on the vessel. At this stage i am using the 29mhz radio in my vehicle as a base station when we go out in areas where the is no "Beach Controll" like Mozambique. With all this in mind i would need three radios in my vehicle which will make my vehicle look like a "Ystervark". So to all the clever people out there is there anyway i can have one radio with one antenna in my vehicle that i can use sort of a three in one with a frequency range that will cover both air and sea?

Hello Witkop, it is possible to buy a radio that will operate in the bands that you require, namely the Vertex standard VX7r series, however this will need opening up to achieve the 29nhz band and also the 136-174 mhz Vhf band commonly used. As part of our product range a device known as 4022 (named by the mountain rescue club after the A119 that crashed) allows two radios and 2 ptts with airband as priority. I am unaware of any other device that will perform this function. so the answers is yes we can do it however we will need specific requirements of frequencies and pre set channels. This may be used in a microlight as well as a vehicle. But they are not cheap and take us a age to make..price is dependent on the requirements.
Cheers Paul

Hi Paul

Thanks for the reply and the advise. The Marine frequency is between 156.0 Mhz. and 174.0 Mhz .The requirements at this stage and as far as i know is the radio itself ,antenna and then the larger frequency range. When you say not cheap what is the estimate figure we talking about? I'm not sure about the preset channels because all of them depend on the area i know 29mhz will be one and then most probably 124.8. however if i can just enter the frequency myself that's not a problem just as long as the possibility is there. Can you please provide me with some contact details so that i can contact you. between 156.0 Mhz. and 174.0 Mhz

Hello Witkop, i will reply to this on open forum so should anybody else require a similar device it is very possible.

I need to know the following as it may be difficult to decipher.

You wish to use a marine band radio, as we know they are the 29mhz band and the upper 174mhz band. This is extremely difficult antenna wise and the lengths will be extremely difficult to match.

The air band is AM at 118-136 mhz so no problem.

Do you need the low frequency marine band at 29 mhz as well as the 156-174 mhz marine band ? This will be easier for us to match up as it would be a two radio project and simply use a marine band and air band radio set up. This will be straightforward and has been done before. The marine band radios are straight channels and easy selected.

Call me on oheight two 960 nine two four 2

Then a solution is possible.

Thanks Paul

Thankyou Paul

If i understand you correctly in simple terms the last mentioned option will mean i will be able to talk to both Air traffic and skiboat vessels? If thats the case then we are on the same channel. I believe most people can benefit from such a radio especially those close to the sea for rescue purposes where a microlight can speak directly to the marines during a search and rescue.

I know there are numerous factors involve with regards to antenna length but what will the estemate length be taking in consideration the it will be mounted on a vehicle.

Also can you please for future interest sake to other readers give an estimate pricing for such a radio?

Two vee rabbits on a Aquilla for counter poaching PMR band/Air Band

A trike system
Now we are getting somewhere, totally correct, you have two radios on the trike with two antennas, the ski boat antenna will be shorter than a air band antenna, either two vee rabbits or 1 vee rabbit and 1 whip to suit either frequency. The 4022 system has a air band priority so it will over ride the marine frequency with incoming transmission. The system has a full intercom, audio input as normal, two headsets with a ptt that has two buttons on the bar or panel. The second (marine or pmr radio) may also be configured to air band or any pmr band and frequency as required. We have done every radio to date, from Kenwood TK series, Taits, Motorola, IcomF303 series, VX150, HYT and even the low band radios. CB we wouldnt waste time with or the 466mhz band as they are toys. They are R7k a system ready to fly and a new marine hand held is probably around R2,5-3k.

Morning Paul

With regards to our conversation is it possible to have one radio that can broadcast on the Marine frequency and only listen in on the Aircraft Frequency? Like the VHF 250 Hand held only a base radio with speaker?

That radio is aserious piece of kit, i have the vx7r and maybe overkill, i dont leave ours out of the safe. Quite simply in the wrong hands it will jam 90% of motor vehicles on the road. It will listen on airband and transmit over a broad spectrum and also maybe used with a tone on the band in question. They are quite complicated to use and may i suggest a icv8 2 metre radio. These are copied by the chinese. If you have a vx8r or vx7r be careful how you leave it around as they are capable of jamming an entire car park..i will not post the frequencies on open forum.
Some equipment on the market may be wrongly utilised. Yes you need a spectrum or ham licence for them...

From the brochure, it appears as if it can only TX on the HAM bands i.e 50-54, 144-146 and 430-440 MHz
Rest is all RX only
So not much use for Marine band and not much danger to any other frequencies except the HAM bands, for which you need a licence
Maybe something like this might be a bit more useful - VHF marine TX/RX and Airband RX only

Phil, they can be opened up, in the back panel there are a series of jumpers...then a software upgrad and its a lethal weapon..

I have a license for air and the 29mhz radio and will be getting my Marine vhf license this weakened so its legal.

I only need to talk on the Marine frequency the Air frequency only needs to be received by my vehicle as there is no real need for me to talk from my vehicle i only really need to receive so that who ever is on the ground will know my location and intention when i fly?
