Windlass trike engine out after steep turns

Hi, anyone who can help with this please?Hubby has a trike, and have used for a number of hours, also did his training with the trike, using a highly accredited flying school and instructor.
On Monday, 31 Dec, early morning, after quite a storm the previous evening, it was still quite cloudy and overcast, we flew for about 40 minutes, including some steep turns. On our way home (fortunately with runway in sight), the engine started to stutter (it is even less funny than a person stuttering :-)). He switched off one of the magnitos (?) and switched it back on again and the engine appeared to be fine. We landed safely. He checked everything and found a little water in the carburettor(?). He cleaned it, checked for water all over and took it for a test flight later in the afternoon. He repeated the manoevres of the morning, no problems. He has been flying everyday since then. Yesterday he checked everyting again and we went flying in the afternoon. This morning, 4 Jan, he went flying again, did steep turns and again the engin shut down. I think he repeated the process of the magnitos and he landed safely. It just boggles the mind why this happens.
I please need help urgently because he is obsessed with flying, if weather permits, he is out at 5 in the morning for an hour or so, and in the evening, at around 6 or so, he is off again.
Thanks!

This sound like the floats in the carburettor needs replacement or it gets stuck, running out of fuel in one bowl.

Also check for perforated floats - help with the process of elimination.

Just thinking about it now, it could also be that there is water in the bottom of the fuel tank - maybe with the steep turns, the water is being displaced and moving around at the bottom, eventuall being sucked into the fuel line ?

Nope, he emptied the fuel tank yesterday to check for exactly that. When he re-filled, he didn't fully empty the cannister, in case of water in the cannister. I'll enlighten him about the floats, will provide feedback. Thanks!

Hi GJH
You did not mentioned the engine type but I assume it is a 503 or 582 Rotax? What type of fuel filter does he use? Did he checked the float levels? Where are you based, and what are the size of the main jets?

Hi GHJ

It sounds like carb icing to me.

Carb icing I would say. Was he descending with reduced power?
