Hi to all. As a Newbie, I was browsing through the Forum to try and answer some of my questions I have before taking the plunge into Microlighting, with regard to Annual Costs, Motor Services and Wing related. The info I wanted was scattered all over the forum, some in very old posts. I thought I would therefore ask these questions here on one Page, so that anybody else wanting “start-up” info could have access to it. This is the info I gathered so far. Please advise if correct, and correct where unnecessary, and of course any info from the “gurus” will help.
To obtain Radio Licence: R1060, inc. 2 days Tutoring, Docs, and Written Exam.(Here in PE)
Radio Licence: Once Off, inc. first year – R600.00, thereafter – R120.00 per annum.
Medical: R650-900 every 3 years over 44, and I think every 5 years if younger.
Aeroclub & Misasa: R630.00 per annum.
If you purchase a second hand Trike: RAASA change of ownership – R650.00
AP: depending where and by whom: R600.00 – R900.00 per annum.(yearly inspection)
RAASA Annual Fees: R250.00 for ATF
Service interval for Rotax 503/582: (I think 600 Hours for Crank Change). Hard to say for the rest, depends on each Trike's life cycle use.
Wing: How many hours before replacing the Wing, or if not flown much, at what Yearly interval. (wing lifespan). Some say 1000-1500 Hours. AP to decide during the annual ATF?
Airframe: What lifespan?( except of course any accidents) or will the AP decide during the annual ATF?
Training: Min 25 Hours. 10 Dual, and 15 Solo. (could take longer, depends on how quick one learns) Ave. R600-800 p/h. Some with Fuel, some Dry(you pay for fuel)
These are the most concerning questions I have before I start. At least I passed my Medical, so I know I can proceed further. Hope you guys can answer the rest. Many thanx

Lineman, welcome mate....if you are allready making sums, the desire to be a microlighter is allready well and truly established. (^^)

This is not an easy question or topic because there are sooooo many variables. One thing I can tell you though is that if you can afford to "buy another vehicle" then you will easily be able to fly and own a samoosa. It is still the cheapest and long term cost effective way to fly a plane....and please dont listen to idiots who call them death traps. They are one of the safest aircraft you can fly.....remember it always comes down to the poephol behind the controls.

There are lots of threads for you to mull over but just remember they are only a guide. I made some detailed comments here:

The bug has clearly bitten you allready....do it  ^
