General Q's

Postby Nacho » Mon Jul 30, 2012 3:46 pm

Hi all,

Just a few Technical Q's:

1. What do you guys think of these outboard glass petrol filters? I always buy the genuine thing from Aviation Engines, but just bough a plane with two of these. One at the tank and another just before the carbs. I heard they cant handle altitude, is this true?

2. The one right by the tank was very dirty, the second one before the carbs were as clean as a whistle. Any objections having two petrol filters in the line? Will this affect anything.

3. What do you use to protect your Dacron sail? I know you get polishes, but whats the best. At this stage I use water and regular car shampoo to clean it properly about every 4th month.

4. I have a Garmin 196, it takes extremely long to detect satellites, sometimes up to 20 minutes. Will a software upgrade do the trick? Where can one do this in the Randburg area?

5. When a refit an exhaust, what grease can I use. Will normal wheel-bearing grease do the trick or will the temps be too high and melt it away. What about copper slip?

6. How often do one replace the little filter between your Autolube and engine?

Hey Willem,

No expert, but you asked for opinions!!

1. I would stay away from those glass jobbies. I have used a couple on when I had my Street-Rod, but they don't last, they tend to suck some air as well!! (I have some filters for you!)

2. I always ran 2 filters on the trike! On just after the tank and one before the fuel pump! The affect this should have is that you should have less chance of dirt getting through!!!

3. Sorry no idea!!

4. You should be able to download the software from the internet for a upgrade on the Garmin. You could also visit Outdoor warehouse, they quite jacked up with the Garmin stuff!

5. Copper Slip, everytime!!!!!!!!!!!

6. MY OPINION ONLY...... remove the autolube vhpy (!!) ...... If I had to fly with autolube, I would replace that filiter as often as possible (hey, I never and will never trust the autolube)

Hoop dit help!

There has been some debate on those glass filters, but the general consensus is that they can cause problems - Make sure you do not get Fong Kong Crap and you should be fine. And as far as the altitude thing go's i do not think that has anything to do with it, it has to do with the size of the mesh in the filter itself. ## ##

Two filters is a good thing but why not have two complete fuel systems, or even better why not two props. It is up to you how many filters you wantt o put inline, one can do the job as you said the one by the tank was Dirty and the second clean, shows the first one was doing it's Job.

In my 2c version i would say a decent Hangar, the Sun will with time get to the material. and you do not allways know what the chemicals are doing to the sail. Keep her clean keep her hangared.

Keep the operating software updated and see if you can get some extra ram for the machine. Also see if you can get an external aerial that could also help.

Copper slip - NO QUESTION

As often as you would replace your Fuel filter, roughly about every 25 hours. I do not use an autolube system but that is what i would recomend.
