Mag or Coil problem?

Postby Alpha » Wed Feb 29, 2012 11:01 am

Hi All,

I am hoping for some wisdom and insight from this forum once again. I am running a 503 on my trike with about 256 hrs, yesterday I went for a quick flip and got a little bit of wake up call...

I have an electric starter on the trike, the battery is earthed to the case of the 503 with a fairly thin earth cable. Yesterday when I tried to start it, the cable burnt and I then disconnected the battery. Started the engine manually and did the necessary checks, all seemed 100%...tested mags at 3500rpm and got about 200 rpm drop on both...

Took off and was at altitude for about 5 minutes when the engine misfired...but then fired ok again....flew for about another 5 or 6 minutes or so and then she did it again. I landed and parked, and when I switched the mags off there was a hiccup as if the engine wanted to fire again, but the mags were off.. i hope I explained it ok...

My question is this...in the time the battery earth wire burnt, could it have managed to open a wire on one of the coils/mags and earthed it? Or where would the next logical problem lie?

Any suggestions??

The kill switch earths the coils (as I understand it anyway) If you had an earth problem and your problem started when you disconnected it, my guess would be that it is not a coincidence. Where it is is depends on your earth wiring. I suggest you replace the earth cable(s) and all the crimps on your thin earth wires to start off with.
