Mag problem (Intermittent)

Postby Bundy » Sun Jan 29, 2012 6:42 am

Morning Gents,

Stef and I flew DBP on Sat (Aquilla 2 582 blue top) and we seem to have a Mag problem. I am hoping you can give us some advice...

Stef took her up first, did a std mag check before TO and then flew for about an Hour. When he landed, he had the trike idling and did another mag check. As he dropped the LH switch the engine died immediately. We put both mags on again and re started... he turned off the LH mag again and this time there was no problem. This was repeated a few times thereafter with no problem detected.

I then went for a flight and again did a STD Mag check at the holding point... RPM 3500 and the RPM did not drop more than 200 on either "MAG". Had a lekker flight, engine purring beautifully and landed. In front of the hanger I let her Idle for a few sec's and then picked up the RPM to around 2000. I turned off the LH mag switch and the engine died. This indicated to me that we have an intermittent problem on the Right hand Magneto? Where do we start looking for the fault Gentlemen? The AP will definately have a look at it but he immediately said its probably the stator....

I have heard that to replace the stator can cost up to R5K....and I really want to eliminate any other possible causes first.

Status: Grounded... :(

Check the wires om the Rh kill switch, somewhere it can be through to the airframe, touching intermittently, causing the problem, all the kill switch do is to "short circuit" the magneto to ground when you switch it off. I suppose one of the Rh mag wires somewhere get in contact with the frame somewhere, sometimes.
