GoPro Motorsports or Helmet HERO?

Postby Loco » Thu Jan 12, 2012 8:24 am

hi guys

i see from the GoPro website regarding the motorsports HERO camera setup: "The HD Motorsports HERO easily mounts to any helmet, motorcycle, ATV, car, plane, jet ski, boat, snowmobile or other vehicle."

and it seems the helmet HERO setup is good if you have one of those ventilated bicycle helmets?

do any of you have experience mounting these cameras, which one would be best suited to mount on a trike helmet and on the wingtip?

here's the lins to the GoPro site:

thanks

Hiya Ant, I have been playing for a while with this project, the UK forum http://www.microlightforum.com has a whole series of threads on the subject. One fellow has made remote mount with servos etc.

My project this year is to video/photo the Boer war battlesites (started 8 years ago) but to make a coffee table book. So I need the right tackle.

The GO Pro hero is a fine piece of kit especially with the new remote viewer and back back that wi fi links to a iPhone etc. Trouble is its getting on the bulky side. I am going the Koday Play sport zx5 route as they have a wide angle adaptor and also a remote device.

Cheers Paul

Greetings Ant!

I use the GoPro2 HD on the wingtip, which, with the 170 fisheye lens gives a great view of your flight. In the attached picture the camera had rotated down slightly, something I have now corrected.

I also fly with a set of goggles (don't have the name right now) which has a HD cam mounted between your eyes.

Then, editing these two clips of a flight (blending into one) gives an awesome video.

You will find that the "headcam view" is fairly limited!

Also, mounting a R3,500 camera onto your helmet with double-sided tape (as per the standard fitting that the GoPro comes with) is a little risky for me! With that said, you could do the same as I have done on my wingtip, in which I have used the tube clamp (bought separately) backed up with some cord in the event of one of the many screw attachments coming loose during flight.

Oh, I have also run a audio feed from my comms through the wing to the wingtip in order to pick up the inflight comms (rather than having to add some arbitary music later!!)

I will upload a picture of the attachement to my wing in my next response!

BTW: These videos are INVALUABLE!!! There is SO much to learn from reviewing take-off, turns/climbs/maneuvers, cruise and landing!

Cheers,

John

I mounted the GoPro onto my base bar on the trike recently and got a fairly wavy type picture coming out once engine started. It has been suggested it was caused by vibration. Anyone else done a base bar shot?

The other big thing is what software you guys using to edit?

I second that,

I have the Go pro HD on my helmet with the standard mounts that accompany it and believ me it will not fall off, very strong mounts.

As for the wavy video, it is definitely caused by vibration, I mounted it on my mast and got the same result, however I mount it on my helmet or on my control bar and perfect footage and I must say the best quality I have ever seen.

Fly safe... (^^)

I am finding the biggest issue is the lack of a remote control. I don't like having an hour of continuous video but rather just the take-off or landing. That means I am restricted to helmet or bar mounted.

Hey Biggles,

Go Pro are bringing out a remote and wifi backpack in feb...will be able to control up to 50 cams on one remote or smart device...

Really awesome stuff

Ja... thought it was integrated already. I read it somewhere and assumed it was included. I was abit miffed when I found out later it was an extra.

But having lots of fun with it... latest project was to attach it to the remote control car ##

The Drift Stealth is the way to go.
You have remote on and off and external mic which I run through the wing to the camera.
I use it for filming the whole flight, recording our conversation and all the radio calls.
Convert it and burn onto a DVD for the TIF.
Amazing quality vhpy vhpy

I have both the GoPro and the Drift and I can recommend the Drift. There is noting wrong with the GoPro but the Drift is just better. The remote is also a bonus.

The remote does not work well if the camera is mounted on the wing tip with the engine running though. I have talk to at least 2 other people who have the same problem. The remote works fine on with the engine off but is very erratic while flying. There must be some interference between the engine and the remote.
