(EGT) Temperature Gauge Thingy

Could someone please tell me how the EGT gauge looks inside. Is the wire (which is a thin wire with mesh wire surround) connected to anything inside or does it "float" inside? Why are there two (vs one) wires going to the digital box (in my case Skydat) or I suppose to Analog instruments? If these wires are loose/kinked etc does it effect the readings?

The EGT sensor is a pin extending through the wall of the Exhaust maifold and placed directly in the path of the hot exhaust gases. Thermocouples use two dissimilar metals that are welded together. An example would be Nickel-Aluminum and Nickel-Chromium. Any two dissimilar metals that make contact will form a small thermoelectric voltage measured in thousandths of volts. The voltage is dependent upon the temperature of the contact point of the metals.

Thermocouples are self powered devices that convert temperature to voltage, this makes them attractive for a variety of applications which measure temperature.

Because the voltage output is so small, amplification is required to
make the signals obtained from the sensors do useful and intelligent
work (ie: record values and trigger outputs). All amplification requires
external power, which is why your EGT gauges are powered.

The two wires are connected to the two different metals and this is then connected to the gauge which in turn measures the voltage variations.

The CGT probe is the same thing, but in this case the metals are formed intoa ring that is placed around the spark plug.
