Rotax 582....Which oil to use?
Rotax 582....Which oil to use?
Hi everyone
I understand that you can use Castrol Super Chainsaw Oil if your airy has a Rotax 503 motor. Reasons being, the motor runs warmer...ect?
It seems not to be advisable to also use this oil in your Rotax 582 Blue Top...? Why would this be? I know the 582 runs cooler, so the oil should be sufficient...is it more a thing of carbon build-up?
Can I replace the Castrol Super Chainsaw with Engen Super Outboard....does this fall within the spec?
If this replacement is correct, do I first need to flush the system?
PLEASE HELP

As far as I have it Castrol Super Chainsaw is for Air cooled engines whereas Castrol Super Outboard is for water cooled engines. I have been running my 582's on Castrol Super Outboard for years now with no ill effects.

Re: Rotax 582....Which oil to use?
It is my understanding that a water cooled engine runs hotter within in the combustion chamber, and because it is water cooled, the heat is dissapated quicker, whereas the air cooled engines do not have this advantage, and so the combustion temps are lower.
As far as the oils go, there has been lots of debate on this, I ran my 503 to 750 hours using exclusively chain saw oil, as for the water cooled 582's using an outboard engine oil makes sense.
However probably most importantly is to be aware of the damage which an engine suffers from lack of use, where moisture ingress through atmospheric changes results in corrosion of the bearings and other surfaces.

Do I need to flush the system before I change to Super Ourboard? I currently have Super Chain Saw Oil in the system.

Hi Smiley, I have no idea what solicited the pedantic comments from Boet, but you can be rest asured that if you follow the manufacturers recommendations with respect to the oil to be used, and you will find that information in the engine owners manual, shout if you do not have one, you can operate your engine with confidence knowing that the oil is suitable for it's operation.

This topic is an on going argument that is always infiltrated by clever wrong advice givers! So PULEEEZE guys, do not start this again.
Re: Rotax 582....Which oil to use?
Smiley, yes, drain out the chainsaw oil, as much as you can get out. I presume you have an autolube system installed? Re fill with Super outboard plus TCW 3, and nothing else. Be carefull not to introduce any air bubbles in the system. Refer to Rotax engine operators manual. Please stick to the instructions. Fly safe.

Tip:
Use it or lose it. Get rid of the auto lube and pre-mix your fuel.
