Microlighters

Hi,

can anyone recommend a good place in Cape Town that could fix up cracks in my fibreglass wheel spats and re-spray them (incl. instrument pod and battery box) at a reasonable cost? I tried a couple of panelshops and bumper-repair places in my area, but they weren't too keen to help. Thanks!

V......... Boet is your man, but he lives in another world. He comes to Cape Town occasionally though...maybe he can pick up and deliver, or courier.

I wouldn't bother about closer. Boet knows his stuff. He knows the colour mixes for all the 'off the shelf' trikes etc etc. He can Pick up here in Cape Town and courier back. 2 Weeks or so and you styling....

Fibreglass gets fine cracks in the gel coat, particularly around fastener points.
I'm not so sure that they can be repaired nicely.
Would it not be better, and cheaper to order a new set of fibreglass components? Couriers cost!

Hmm, ok thanks. I'm not too worried about the colours, I don't think my Windlass is of any of the original colours anyway. Definitely not the same blue as the blue Aquillas I've seen so far.

Byron - yes, I have a lot of those cracks you describe, plus a couple deep scratches (happened when the Conties tornado dragged my trike out of the hanger). I thought some decent sanding and the application of the right materials (whatever they may be) would help there.

Getting a new set is a tricky question. I started off with re-using my existing pod for cost reasons. A new pod would cause a major cost over-run on the project. Also, I initially wanted the MGL XTreme, but it didn't fit into my pod and ended up with the Infinity singles. A new pod would be bigger and that would open up a whole new horizon ...) Also, if I shelled out for new wheel-spats, then I would get the wide-ones for beach tyres - meaning new tyres, etc. Another major cost over-run

Johnny at Stellair (AMO at FASH ) repaired my Jabs Spats,

I know he also have saved a friend of mine alot of mula in Fibreglass Cessna Spat.

Back in the days of racing superbikes, those cracks in the gel coat used to drive me mad. If you repair them, they do eventually come back. Something you will have to live with i'm affraid.
But try anyway.

Looks like there is hope. Found a panelshop nearby that does bumper repairs and works with fibreglass. One of their guys claims to have worked for a boatbuilder and did motorcycle and microlight stuff. I need to show them the stuff first to get a quote. Bonus so far that they're in walking distance from where I live, so logistics will be easy.
