Trike Pax comfort

Postby Biggles » Sun Jun 27, 2010 2:29 pm

With the Missus getting more and more comfortable with flying (she now keeps her eyes open on landings and take-offs  ) I am getting more feedback on how uncomfortable/ unnerving it is as a passenger ($$) .

The common comments are:
She feels that her feet want to slip of the foot pegs (easily remedied with end stops)
She doesn't like having nothing to put her hands on to steady herself. As she feels like she might fall out.

In addition to this I would like to install a 4 piont harness for pax and myself. As a pax I had a slowspeed rollover on landing in Peru and can vouch for the 4 piont harness and can best describe the feeling of rolling with a 4 piont harness as "comfortable"!!

Any advice on takkling these modifications would be helpful. Specifically anchor points for the harness and the positioning of a grab handles for pax. And where to get metal 4 piont buckles and strap.

I extended the passenger foot rests by approx 150mm on each side. That helped with the feeling of feet falling off and the comfort level of not having to sit with "buckled" legs!!

The GT has a second shoulder strap, secured on the pylon behind the pax's (left) shoulder which goes over the pilot's left shoulder and fastens on the right side from the bottom of the seat.

Same trike, same problem. Maybe I had better lenghten the foot rest aswell and put ends to stop the foot slipping. My wife wanted foot loops like on a bicycle.

Belive me, it makes a huge difference to lengthen it!

I like that idea... simple and will just need a loop around the existing belt near the buckle and an adjustable strap. I could even just have a loop around teh pylon so it can go up and down with the height of teh pax.

Have you suggested they take their feet off the foot rests for a few moments? They will realise with a shock that it makes no diffs.
I have also learned that it helps to make pax 'bump' up and down in the seat and feel how solid the machine they are in, is.
This immediately makes them secure.

use it, lose it...

I think its mainly during take-off and landing that she feels insecure. In flight she does move her feet around and I showed he to hook her feet into the undercarriage strut. When I have back seated I feel better that way than feet on the pegs. It seems the pax footrests are too narrow on the Scout. Easy to fix as its an aluminuim pole that slides through the fram, so i just need to get a longer pole.
