Hi Manne
Has anyone thought of mounting an 85HP Jabiru motor on a trike? (**)
Price, technical details etc

See nothing wrong with it! Should not be a problem. Jabi motor is not that much heavier.

Hi Redrocket.

The basics is ok. We had discussions with Len at the factory and they are not to keen on the Jabi in the pusher configuration, mainly for cooling airflow.

I know Rudi at Rhinopark is busy with a project to fit the Jabi in a Streak Shadow, also pusher configuration. Maybe he can shed some light regarding the ideas that he has.

The fitment in the Jabi is a puller and they have clean airflow which they can route with baffle plates to ensure optimal cooling/ airflow through the cylinders.

Hi,

There are at least two Streaks fitted with Jabi engines in the Cato Ridge area.

Braam has a very good point.
Almost all the cooling on the Jab comes from the cylinder head cooling ducts.
Cooling this engine in a pusher is not too difficult in something as fast as a Streak with lots of ram air.
I have also wondered why we don't see this awesome little motor in trikes, slower speed pusher cooling is probably the reason.
Jabiru Australia do offer forward facing cylinder ram air ducts for a pusher installation and I am sure they would know if it can be done on a trike.
Staying tuned to hear the outcome!

Hi Braam!

Yes, the Jabbi in my Shadow now has around 420 hours and it works well! Cooling is NOT a problem BUT you do have to use the Jabiru provided cooling ducts or make custom ones. I use custom ducts since they fit my installation better.

There are quite a few Shadows flying in SA with Jabbi's, fitted by the Factory (Len) before they started building the Jabiru planes.

If anything the engine is running too cold with CHT's seldom above 100C!

Regards,
Rudi

I agree, the cooling on a slower plane might be a problem?

You can use the standard ducts, they fit both ways!

There was a certain person, no names mentioned, who fitted the ducts the wrong way round on his (tractor)plane after a service and then had rather high CHT's on his first (very short) flight vhpy He did notice it in time so no harm done after a rather quick landing.....

Fly safe,
Rudi

The Jabiru website states it is both for tractor and pusher use. (^^)

I wonder if the cooling ducts made for the Bantam would not work if they are swopped around. (left with right)
