Leaded or unleaded...

Postby DarkHelmet » Mon Jun 06, 2005 10:55 am

I was told to run my Rotax 582 on unleaded, my next door neighbour swears by leaded...

What are the pro's/con's/do's/dont's?

"they say" unleaded will burn cleaner and deposit less carbon, I run on unleaded and use TTS and have just about no carbon. Please just don't go down the "what oil should I use" lane, you might just not hear the end of it :!:

My plane has done most of it's 480 hours on unleaded. I only recently bought it. When I was completing my licence this year my instructor, who will remain anonymous, almost banned me from the airfield because I brought in unleaded. He was superstitious about it, blaming it on all sorts of evil. So I have been using leaded now for 2 months and I am thinking of going back to the known. At 380 hours the motor was given a overhaul and there was almost no carbon build up to speak of. Andbesides, after today's scary moment, (see other post) maybe I should get back to the tried and tested. I'm also becoming superstitous now and its scary.

Use unleaded

Postby Thys Basson » Tue Jun 07, 2005 9:20 pm

Recently me and 30 other pilots and aircraft manufacturers were on a Rotax course by Aviation Engines. The course was conducted by Eric Tucker from the USA, with 37 years experience on 2-stroke engines.
He recomended unleaded feul with Castrol Super Chainsaw oil. Pricewise for sure the one to go for ( R11 for 500ml). All the pilots I know use this oil.

If you have difficulty finding Castrol Super Chainsaw, get hold of your local BP/Castrol depot. We buy a case 20x500ml bottles. If you have an autolube, try getting a 20lt drum, it's cheaper that way.
Regards.

Oil. Again and again and again.........

Postby Boet » Thu Jun 09, 2005 9:56 pm

Rotax manual (Operatos Bible) states: Water cooled: Super outboard plus TCW-3 Nothing else.
Air cooled: API spec "Super chainsaw oil" ( HEAVY duty oil) Ever listened to a big chainsaw going through a rather thick tree??? Those motors work very hard.....
Two stroke engines do not require lead. The lead in petrol is there to "lubricate" the valves on 4-stroke engines. 95 lead free, that`s what the book says. But 95 messes up the belly of my aerie, so.....97.

I bought a case of 20x500ml from a local BP service station. Owner is a friend of mine.

Not in so much detail, but he said that the specs of the oil are 100% for the engine, and it was tested.( And the price is fine.)

I did some digging and found out

Castrol Super Chainsaw Two Stroke oil is available directly from Castrol in Cape Town and probably elsewhere in the country. They are at 66 Auckland Street, Paarden Island (021 511 0574) and the price is R193 incl for 20X500ml case. That's half the price of the stuff I'm using at the moment.
