Can anybody tell me how to wire up a genuine hobbs meter to a blue top 582 so it only starts counting on engine start up? Where do I take the power from?

Thanks

I run my 503 through the mags. Mags on and hobbs runs. Will see if I can find the wiring diagram somewhere.

I use a SkyDat Rev Counter / Hobbs meter combination. It only logs hours on the motor when it is actually running.

What you need is to replace one of your Mag switches, which normally is closed and sends an earth to the ignition system to kill the ignition, to a 2-way contact switch shown here as Mag Switch 1.

I have seen these switches with 3 contacts at the back. The centre contact is where the earth would go. Then when you throw the switch up, the earth connects to the top contact, and when you throw it down, the earth connects to the other. One of these contacts you connect to the earth point on the Hobbs, and the other goes to the Black Yellow ignition shorting wire.

You also get the switch in a dual package, in this case it is your choice if you want to separate the ignition circuit from the hobbs circuit. Then you can either switch a +12v or an earth to the hobbs. I would prefer NOT to have +12V and earth in the same switch.

Thanks Guys.

I have got a skydat wired in to my bushbaby as well so I will have to look at that or the mag switch option. Not being an electrician, I was thinking of taking power from the output side of the regulator but that wouldn't solve the problem of the hobbs working as soon as the master is switched on, would it?

Morph, I have got one of those three way switches so I will set it up as a test rig and figure it out before ripping the back of my panel apart!

Cheers

Becareful. Skydat works hours out when it picks up rpm. Your hobbs meter will work differently. You can either do as morph suggests, or you can link directly from the rectifier, which has it draw backs. If you don't have a battery, this is normally how the hobbs pick up its power. Don't try to be too fancy though. Good luck.
