Hello Guys,

This almost new Rotax 582 Blue Head with only 100 hrs in a Quicksilver decide to quit in the air. Emergency landing was ok with no damage to the Quicksilver neither to the pilot.

The engine was working perfect and sudenly the RPM beguin to drop until it stop completely :(

We decide to open the motor today and we remove only the cylinders. This is what we found.
If you check the pics you will see a cooper color part was stuck on the crankshaft.

Were this part coming from? Were it goes in the engine and why this happened?

Any clue?

THX,

Isaac

Loks like it did some bouncing on top of the cylinder there.

Inside the crank perhaps one of these spacers or clips came loose? see image

Other something injested by the motor via the carbs.

Hey Morph

I think this next week we goint to take apart the crank case to see what we find. But its look like that part thats goes in the Crankshaft.

This engine is Oil injection and use Penzoil oil

The thing is why this happened and how to prevent this from happened again.

That is detonation damage on that piston. My guess is that you lost spark on that cylinder on full load with resulting detonation.

Check the mags, wires for skuffing, plugs etc.

We had a 582 fail almost exactly same way. The marks on the piston is while the offending piece of metal was bouncing around in the combustion chamber - damaging the piston. The connecting rod big end bearing failed. The copper part is probably the washers either side of the connecting rod big end - looks like one of them failed.

It will be obvious when you split the crankcase.

how does a piece of metal that big come up past the piston and rings (rings look intact) if not through the intake ports...is it from the carb? very interesting to finaly know what it is....well done that you landed safely

Hey Graham Mac, the big metal part was stuck on the crank but small metal debris went to the top of the piston thru the tranfer ports.

The engine stop in the air because that big part got stuck in the crankshaft and stuck completely the engine.

I dont think we going to rebuild this engine, so I think is better and safe to go for a completely new 582

Just for infos sake.

618 at Rhino that also lost power, fortunately on take off, so the plane couldn't get in the air. On inspection this is what we found.

and the culprit

The other piston took a lot more hammering.

My guess would be, in the 582, if something bounced on the piston the whole crown would be full of markings, and not just on the sides.

On the 618 the pistons and coil were replaced, and she is happy again.

Low level - My opinion here - yes the issue with the coil is what casued your power loss that day. The damage to the pistons wasn't. Whatever went through there did so quite a while before the coil stopped it short. Those marks were there for a long time as they are all carboned up already - they are not new markings. Also whatever came off in the coil bits cannot end up inside the pistons. So the damage inside was caused by something else.
