Moving radiators on Rotax 582

Hi,

I am in the process of buying a Raptor with a Rotax 582 power mill, and the radiator is mounted above the engine, and I would like to move it to a more conventional place, under the engine.

Can someone who has done this kind of change, please give me as much information as possible as to what needs to be done ?

Thanks

Do you want to do it yourself, or have a Manufacturer/AP do it for you?

First you are going to have to build a bracket that fastens on to the airframe to suspend the radiator. I have seen them on either side of the engine, or centrally below the engine. Don't mount onto the engine because the vibration will cause cracks. The radiator must not have a cap on it, i.e. it must be sealed since it is now going to be at the bottom of the system and the last thing you need is someone opening this cap and all the coolent running out . Silverton Radiators will make up any radiator for you

Then you need to install a water expansion tank at the top, at the highest point with an overflow bottle. Both of these are parts available from Aviation Engines or a good radiator place can make one up for you. Make sure you use the correct pressure cap (look at the one you have now, the pressure should be stamped into the top. Typically .9 to 1.2 bar

If you have to run very long lengths of rubber hose, rather get 25mm alluminium piping and have the radiator place put ridges on each end. Then use rubber bends.
