I came across an Australian company manufacturing mainly VW based aircraft engines see http://www.vw-engines.com/index.htm

I quote:

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of these? Application for example the Carl Babst Raven.

Give Kobus v Staden A call he was the manufacturer of the Cubby.

He is now working on a new project and he is also developing a new fuel injected engine based on the VW engine which will give 125HP for take off.

I dont know more than what is written here

Always better to have local back up if problems occur.

Have a look at a Continental C85 or a Conti C90 or even a Conti O-200 These engines give masses of torque and compete with the VW weight wise.

An overhauled Conti is good for 1800 hours and price wise may be the better choice in the long run.

However we all have different perceptions.

Just remember the higher the HP a VW is asked to produce the more heat it also produces and the shorter its service life will be.
