I only use the GPS to keep off the red carpet. I fly near and around controlled airspace and for that the 196/296 are great. I cut my GPS teeth on 12XL. Still works today and if it were not hotwired into the KRII I would have kept it... Then moved onto Pilot III. Then moving map bug bit and I went to EKP. Huge screen in comparison to the Pilot III. That was RDP'd and new ones were too expensive so went back to Garmin with 196....
PS
I first flew with GPS when I had just over 400hrs.... They are nice to have, but when you don't fly because you forgot your GPS maybe it time to worry a little bit
