Thanks Stephan

All the info at Vans very informative. Especially about the internal battery being rechargable. The 196 does not have a built in rechargable main battery - just 4 AAs. I have rechargables in it at the moment. It did stand for a while.

My reasoning runs like this..... the unit being unused has run the internal battery down. The rechargables are lower voltage than standard disposable AAs and deteriorate over time. They probably struggle to recharge the internal battery.

I will try to run the unit off the 12v input cable for 24 hours and see if it helps

Otherwise I will just live with cold starting it. It seems Garmin rips you off to fix it.

Yeah - worthwhile to note that Garmin themselves will not repair them. My 196 did a belly up on me - it would not run on internal power anymore. Paid some money (forget the amount was juts short of R1k) and voila Garmin replaced it with a new unit - although I think they have the right to also replace with a reconditioned unit.
