582 Service Intervals

Postby goldie » Tue Dec 09, 2008 7:29 am

Hi,
My 582 Blue Top has just been serviced by an authorised Rotax agent at 275 hours. He has told that the factory recommendation is a major overhaul at 300 hours (Cost +- R30k.) However there is an alternate service schedule which is approved by the CAA of this major service at 600 hours!.The Rotax agent has told me that he prefers to follow the factory guidelines and I trust him completely.
I never cut corners when safety is concerned and want to do the right thing but R30 k is a lot of money.Any input/suggestions.
The great thing about getting older is that you don't have to prove yourself anymore.

If your engine has been meticulously maintained then you can trust the 600 hour rebuild. The 300 hour service can be used to inpect the crank if you so wish.

The revised 600 hour schedule was proposed by experts in the aviation engine field, including the local Rotax distributor as they have seen through experience that the 300hour limit is far too short.

However this is entirely your decision. In my opinion you are wasting a valuable R30K

I used the right oil ( Castrol chainsaw) and right fuel (95 unleaded) and looked after my engine and when it was opened at 600 hours everything was still within spec according to the AMO. However I went the full 100 yards and had a complete overhaul done and the R 30 000 quoted service ended up being R45 000 at the end. So as far as I'm concerned don't fiddle with your engine at 300 hours because that is when you will pick up trouble. I had my first engine out after the major service ##

I agree with Morph. The 582 has proved that it will do at least double the 300 hour recommended time and in many cases triple. Keep the filters clean (especially air filters) use a good quality oil at the correct ratio and change the spark plugs at the recommended intervals and I am confident that you will enjoy the next 300 hours as much as the first

As for the other reply: Chain saw oil is for air cooled 2 strokes so I assume you have a 503 Rotax. Rotax defines an overhaul as a replacement of all moving parts. We know which parts move so an accurate quote is not difficult. I think you got ripped off and has it occurred to you that you had your first engine out AFTER your AMO "fiddled"

Don't do unecessary things to your engines and keep them clean and they will give you reliable service.

There is a check that tests the play on the crank and the bearings. You can check the freeplay by removing the carbs and there is an approved amount and you can check the main and small end play using a device which screws into the plug hole and uses vacuum and a dial gauge. Your approved AMO should have those special tools and know how to use them otherwise he is simply ripping you off by advising the rebuild.
